Student loan hell

This is just a heads up for anyone out there who could have this happen to you.
Did you know that if you have federal student loans, become disabled, defer your loans, stay in contact with the loan company, etc…….that you too can get a phone call telling you that your disability benefits are being garnished.
And not just garnished, but SUPER garnished. To the tune of $600 a month (out of the $869 you get to live on). Yep, that’s over 70%. I tell her that payments like that would leave me homeless, she told me to go get on welfare. Then she told me to take out a payday loan that I can’t afford to pay back, just so I could make my first $600 payment. WHAT?!?!?
Not only that, but the collector will be more than happy to tell you how useless you are, ask you about your medical history, and talk about your personal life. She’ll also yell at you on the phone when you don’t give her the answers she wants. All the time demanding you hand over your banking information.
Then she’ll offer to “get you into another program” that will drop your payment to $400 a month. When you explain you can’t afford that either, she’ll “offer” to get you into another program and drop your payment to $200 a month. You explain you aren’t paying anything until you get paperwork, she says you can’t have any paperwork until you make a payment. WTF?!?!?
So, I state one last time, I’m not making a payment today and I want paperwork. These people have never contacted me to say my loan was even late. On top of that, I had been in constant contact with them, and each time I was told everything was fine, the loans were being deferred.
The woman then says fine, we’ll just garnish you then. I tell her, “that’s fine, at least I’ll have some type of paperwork then.” She hangs up on me.
I’ve already told my sister not to take out any loans for school, I would really hate to see her have to deal with these people and get lied to also.
My advice if you’re gonna go to school: get private loans or pay out of pocket. DO NOT get any federal loans, these people are allowed to do and say anything to you, and you basically have no rights at all.
I know I have these loans, I just can’t afford them right now while I’m trying to get everything caught up. I planned on paying them. I thought I was doing the right thing by staying in contact with them and keeping them deferred, boy was I wrong.
Hell, I was actually planning on going back to school at some point, but not now. Even if the loans are taken out of default status. I don’t want any more of a reason to deal with these slimy liars.
